Notary ID requirements in Ohio

Every notarization requires the notary to verify the signer's identity using acceptable identification. Requirements are similar for in-person and remote online sessions, with extra technical steps for RON.

Acceptable forms of identification

Generally accepted IDs include unexpired U.S. state driver's licenses, state ID cards, U.S. passports, and certain federal or tribal photo IDs. The ID must be government-issued, include a photo, and be current.

If you are unsure whether your ID will be accepted, request an appointment before your appointment with the ID type you plan to use.

Name on ID vs. name on document

The name on your ID should match the name on the document you are signing. Minor variations (middle initial vs. full middle name) may be acceptable depending on the notary's judgment and document context.

If you recently changed your name, bring supporting documentation if available and discuss the situation when scheduling.

Expired or damaged ID

Expired identification cannot be used for notarization. Plan ahead to renew your driver's license or passport before your appointment.

Damaged IDs that obscure the photo, name, or expiration date may also be rejected.

Multiple signers and witnesses

Every person who will sign before the notary — including witnesses when they must be identified — needs their own valid photo ID.

For remote online sessions, each participant joins with ID ready for camera verification.

ID verification during remote online notarization

During your secure video session, you will hold your ID to the camera and follow platform prompts so the notary can verify identity in real time. Good lighting and a stable connection help avoid delays.

Have your physical ID in hand — digital photos of your ID on a phone are not a substitute for presenting the actual document during the session.
