The notary's role

Notaries act as impartial witnesses to deter fraud and confirm that signers understand what they are signing. The notary checks identification, observes the signature, and records the notarial act in a journal as required by Ohio law.

A notary cannot tell you which document to use, whether your transaction is legally sound, or how a court or agency will rule on your submission.

When you may need a notary

Common situations include affidavits, powers of attorney, school residency statements, loan signing packages, and various business or personal forms that require notarization before filing.

The organization requesting your document — a school district, lender, court, or government office — determines whether notarization is required and which type is acceptable.
