Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about remote online notarization, mobile notary visits, documents, identification, and pricing for Ohio and Greater Cincinnati clients.

Online notarization (RON)

Can documents be notarized online in Ohio?

Yes. Ohio authorizes Remote Online Notarization (RON) under ORC § 147.60–147.67. An Ohio-commissioned notary can notarize eligible documents for any signer physically located in Ohio via a live audio-video session. Not every document is eligible — eligibility depends on the document type and whether your receiving institution accepts RON.

Do I need to be physically in Ohio for RON?

Yes. Ohio law requires the signer to be physically located in Ohio at the time of a Remote Online Notarization session. The notary does not need to be in the same location as you, but you must be in Ohio when the session takes place.

What documents cannot be notarized online in Ohio?

Some documents require wet ink signatures regardless of Ohio's RON authorization. I-9 employment verification forms cannot be notarized remotely under federal law. Wills may require wet ink depending on your Ohio probate court. Many financial institutions and healthcare providers still require in-person notarization for certain documents. We confirm requirements before booking.

What is remote online notarization?

Remote online notarization (RON) allows an Ohio notary public to notarize your document during a secure live audio-visual session. You and the notary are not in the same physical location. Ohio law permits RON when applicable requirements are met.

How do I schedule an online notarization appointment?

Visit our Online Notary Ohio page or contact us with your document type. After booking, provide document details. We review if needed, then we send your secure remote session link by email.

Is online notarization instant?

No. You schedule an appointment, we review document details if needed, and you receive your session link for a scheduled remote session. This is not automated instant notarization.

Which documents are eligible for online notarization in Ohio?

Eligibility depends on document type and receiving agency requirements. Commonly requested documents include affidavits and powers of attorney, but some agencies require in-person notarization or additional steps.

Documents and forms

Where can I find Ohio notary forms and workflows?

The Ohio Notary Forms guide lists common documents with links to scheduling pages and educational resources. The Resources section includes deeper articles on specific document types.

Can you tell me which form I need?

We can explain notarization options for a document you already have but cannot advise which legal form fits your situation. Consult your receiving agency, program instructions, or an attorney for legal questions.

What does it mean when you say receiving agencies may have additional requirements?

Schools, the BMV, courts, and lenders may require steps beyond notarization — specific witnesses, filing deadlines, or in-person submission. Notarization confirms your signature; it does not guarantee the agency will accept the full package.

Identification requirements

What ID do I need for notarization?

A valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The ID must match the name on the document being notarized. For online sessions, your ID is scanned and verified during the secure video session. For in-person appointments, present your physical ID to the notary at signing.

What do I need for my appointment?

You need a valid government issued ID, the document being notarized, and any required witnesses if your document requires them. For online notarization, you will also need a device with internet access, camera, microphone, and email access.

What ID do I need for online notarization?

Valid government-issued photo identification is required. Identity verification is completed during your secure online session according to Ohio RON requirements.

What ID do I need for a mobile notary visit?

Bring current government-issued photo ID to your appointment. The name on your ID should match the name on the document being notarized.

Can I use an expired ID?

Generally, no — notarization requires current valid identification. If you have an unusual situation, request an appointment before your appointment to discuss options.
